The backlight is not the one we use the most in food photography. It’s not the safest side light and can’t be used in every scene. When we shoot with the backlight, our hero is between us and the light. We photograph against the light.
The backlight can be used when photographing translucent or transparent drinks. Then the light shines through the liquid giving the impression of mystery.
You can also use the backlight to photograph food in a shallow bowl or plate. The bowl cannot be profound because it will block the light, and the light will not have a chance to reflect off the food and will not look appetizing.
The backlight must have something to reflect on – so it loves liquids and shiny surfaces, giving the photos a unique atmosphere.
